Many people buy the Toyota Camry for its reliability, price, and practicality. However, in the recent years, Toyota has turned this once boring family car into something that looks more sporty. They did an excellent job last year without overdoing it, but the one recently released at the Detroit International Auto Show looks ridiculous. It has over the top aggressive looks without the performance to match it.

Toyota Camry

The model that they seem to be most proud of the most is the XSE model. This specific model represents something that people with no taste would do to their car. The front end of this so called family car is a joke. It seems like Toyota was trying to create a throwback to the 2007 Toyota Camry. The grill looks like a botched up Lexus grill that went through plastic surgery to make it look better and plastic surgery again to fix the previous results because it was botched. It looks like the second surgery didn't go very well. The XLE model has a massive grill that looks like a razor or a rapper with diamonds on their teeth grinning. It is terrible. Apart from the grills, it looks okay, but slightly too aggressive.

The rear end is not only overly aggressive, but also has a huge smell of being fake. The little fake vents beneath the lights on the XSE model would look great on a Corvette but not on some front wheel drive family car. However, the thing that gets me the most is the quad exhaust tips. This looks like something someone with no taste would add to their Toyota Camry. Quad exhaust tips look amazing on the Audi R8, but they look corny on a Camry. Not only that, but the quad exhaust tips are tiny, which slightly kills the "sporty" feel that Toyota is trying to introduce to future Camry buyers.

The biggest problem I have with cars like these is that they don't drive as "sporty" as they look. These "sporty" elements do not belong on a front wheel drive family sedan. They belong on a Lamborghini or at least something rear wheel drive or has a performance all wheel drive. Toyota should've known better than to create a car with such a big ego. People who feel that the car is too aggressive will go for something like a Honda Accord. However, the LE model has not been released yet. That is Toyota's chance to make sure Camry buyers who don't want TINY quad exhaust tips or stupid razor blade grills with still buy the Camry. It may have to be a bit boring because all this "excitement" may seem too much for some people, who just want a commuter car that gets them from point a to b.

Toyota Camry Interior
By Toyota |
Despite the awful exterior, Toyota still knows how to design an interior. There is a good amount of movement, but button placement is still logical, easy to find, and not overcrowded. There are still big comfortable seats that remind you that the Camry should be about comfort and practicality rather than sportiness because that isn't a market where the Camry belongs.

2017 Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry belongs in a market where people who don't want sportiness and just want a simple car to carry their family around or to commute to work. This is what Toyota has been creating for the last 35 years. Despite most of the article telling Toyota to stop making the Camry too exciting, the SE model should still be around for younger people who don't want a boring car, except less overly aggressive and without a sense of Toyota being a try hard.
